Wound healing is the process by which a tissue repairs itself after trauma. In the context of wound healing of skin, the goal is to regenerate the tissue in a manner that the original functional and structural properties are restored, while minimizing the appearance of the scar. Wound healing studies are particularly useful in the preclinical phase to verify that a particular drug has no negative effect on natural healing capabilities. A straightforward way to evaluate the quality of the wounding process is to evaluate the tension load at rupture of the wound. Products designed to improve the outcome of wound healing need to demonstrate how they perform in restoring the mechanical function of the skin.
