核磁共振成像MRI造影劑可以分為縱向弛豫造影劑 (T1制劑)和橫向弛豫造影劑（T2制劑）。T1制劑是通過水分子中的氫核和順磁性金屬離子直接作用來縮短T1，從而增信號，圖像較亮；T2制劑是通過對外部局部磁性的不均勻性進行干擾，使鄰近氫質子在弛豫中很快產生相(diphase)來縮短T2，從而減弱信號，圖像較暗。

弛豫效率是MRI造影劑關鍵指標之一。弛豫效率的樣品，可以使用少的量效果；在造影劑研究領域，紐邁開發了小型的核磁共振成像分析儀，可測試的測試造影劑T1、T2弛豫時間，并可對試管樣品進行成像，提供定量和定性評價數據，為造影劑產品的與改進提供的檢測手段。
